Am sure we have all watched the numerous self help like TV ads; "Change starts with you".. Never has this slogan like advert been more true than it is today.. In todays age even saying the wrong thing can land in a lot of trouble am sure Donald Sterling previous owner of the L.A clippers and Megyn Kelly from Fox network can both attest to this.
This phenomenon, groundswell is fairly new and has greatly affected the way companies do their marketing for the first time in history companies have to be very careful how they portray themselves to their customers because all it takes is one displeased customer and a blog and a companies name is then trashed.
As expected some companies have done really well while others with the "Donald sterling" understanding of things have failed so miserably.
Oreo for example did very well during the 2013 Superbowl when it tweeted "Power out? No problem You can still dunk in the dark".
This tweet went viral mostly due to the fact that it was timely. It was sent right when there was a black out and with in no time it was retweeted by the so many millions of tweeter users.
this is a perfect example of a company that has decided to get on the groundswell wagon and is using it to its advantage.
So many other companies are starting to take advantage of the groundswells ability to have more reach with the general population.. Basically groundswell is "word of mouth" gone crazy..
i mean you are twice more likely to check out an advert if its recommended to you by a friend on Facebook or tweeter than you would ordinarily.
In 20011 Cocacola's face recognition software went viral and in just one month 150,000 users had compared their faces using the coke zero face profiler. How much do u want to bet that this alone increased their sales a whole lot.
